這個習語現在用來形容一個人的社會地位瞬間失去。
Fall from grace,或fall與亞當和夏娃偷吃了禁果被從伊甸園驅逐出來這個典故有關。這是人類墮落的開始。自此男人必終身勞苦才能養家糊口，女人也必受生育之苦。 不過，這個習語的真正出處來自新約。使徒保羅在加拉太（也就是現在的土耳其）警告基督徒說，如果他們要靠著律法稱義的，就是從恩典中墮落了（加拉太書5：4）。在基督教中，恩典并不是靠著我們的努力而得，而是靠上帝的恩賜。希望通過律法來掙得恩典就是漠視上帝的恩典。
